Mastering Your Machine-Part 1 (One-on-One Class)

Estimated time: 3 hours

Cost: $90 (payable after machine verification)

 

Do you have a sewing machine you’ve been itching to explore? Are you curious about making your own clothes, crafts or repairs? If so, come join us and master the basics of YOUR sewing machine in a one-on-one familiarizing class. Participation is as easy as 1,2,3.

 

Requirements:

· Functioning Sewing Machine and appropriate bobbin (Quick check verified.)

· New Universal Sewing Machine Needle (Size 12 or 14)

· Fat Quarter of woven fabric (no knit fabrics)

· Members only, no experience needed.

 

*STEP 1 (VERIFY): First, let’s make sure your machine is operational. 

The textile team is offering sewing machine quick checks in preparation for this class. Sign-up for a verification here, and a member will meet you to perform the quick check assessment. Please bring your sewing machine and any manuals or attachments you may have. If it fails, it may be necessary to have the machine properly serviced before continuing.

 

*STEP 2 (REGISTER): If your machine passes the quick check, Lorraine will receive notification and a Mastering Your Machine-Part 1 sign-up link will be emailed to you. Upon registration, the textiles team will reach out to set-up a convenient time for your personalized introductory class.

 

Be sure to watch Intro to Sewing for an introduction to sewing machine parts and functions PRIOR to class.

 

*Step 3 (LEARN): In class, Learn to:

 

· Understand bobbin locations and thread types.

· Wind the bobbin.

· Insert the bobbin using proper thread orientation.

· Understand upper thread orientation options.

· Thread the machine.

· Thread with needle threader, if available.

· Make a straight stitch.

· Adjust the thread tension.

· Adjust the stitch length and width.

· Adjust the machine speed, if possible.

· Understand the stitch plate seam guides.

· Make a specific width seam (most common 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 5/8 inch).

· Initiate a backstitch (reverse stitch) to secure a seam.

· Change the needle position (used for zippers and other applications).

· Understand Needle Up, Needle Down option, if available.

· Change the needle.

· Understand Feed Dog positioning, if available.

· Learn overview of some commonly used sewing tools.
