Introduction to Greenwood Carving

In this class we will take will go from logs to functional kitchen accessories. If you are interested in spoon carving, this is a great first step! The only tool required for this class is a carving knife.

This class will go over how to process a log into billets to make your butter spreader or spatula. We will go over proper grips and techniques so you can learn how to carve in an effective and safe way. We will draw out our templates and talk about grain direction and the best ways to carve with the grain to avoid splitting. We will also learn proper sharpening and stropping techniques to keep your knife razor-sharp, making carving a more pleasant experience. We will go over how to finish your utensil once it is dry by talking about food-safe finishes, and the differences between burnishing and sanding.

At the end of the class, you will leave with either a finished utensil or a partially completed utensil with the knowledge and tools to complete it on your own.

Wood will be provided for the class.

Attendees must bring their own carving knife.

Morakniv 106 $23: This is THE knife used most by Greenwood spoon carvers. Don’t let the price fool you, it’s a great knife, one of the most used in my toolkit.

Leather Strop $9: While the space does have natural and diamond sharpening stones at the space I’d recommend getting a strop if you can swing it. In Greenwood carving the wood is softer so you don’t have to sharpen as often. Instead, you can strop to hone the edge and bring it back to a super sharp edge quickly.
